Welcome to the Home of Air Force Rugby!

small logo

Update as of 15 JANUARY 2012

Welcome to the US Air Force Rugby website!  USAF Rugby is made up of Active Duty, Air National Guard and Reserve airmen of all ranks and AFSCs from around the globe.

OFFICIAL MESSAGE REGARDING THE 2012 TRIAL VENUE:

 Air Force Ruggers,

I hope this message finds you all well.  This year's primary trial venue will take place 6-12 March 2012 during the St Patty's Day Rugby Tournament in Savannah, GA.  Players of all skill levels and experience are encouraged to attend.  This is a great opportunity to represent the Air Force, be part of a championship program, receive excellent rugby coaching and meet your fellow USAF rugby brethren.

What:  AF Rugby Trial Venue

Where:  St. Patty's Rugby Tournament, Savannah GA. http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/savannahshamrocks/

When:  6-12 March 2012 "NOT 2010" (Tues - Mon).  Travel days are 6 and 12 Mar; mini training camp is 7-9 Mar; tournament is 10-11 Mar.

Why:  To identify players to represent the US Air Force at the 2012 Armed Forces Rugby Championship; to represent Air Force Rugby as a class entity; to provide player evaluation and feedback; to build team cohesion and player pool depth; to build staff cohesion and depth; to have fun, and to win the tournament.

Who:  One to two teams (possibly a third depending on numbers).  Approximately 48 AF ruggers plus staff.  If enough players attend (especially front row players) we'll add a third men's team to the tournament.

How:
1. Email Coach Wayne Kinsel at usaf_rugbycoach@hotmail.com with your intent to participate, experience level, primary position, rank and homestation
via e-mail by COB 27 Jan 12!

2. I'll respond with further guidance (AF Form 303 will be required, website guidance, due dates, fitness expectations, etc)

3. PTDY through an official letter from Air Force Sports will be granted to those who commit to attend with your commander's approval.

4. If you haven't already registered at www.usafrugby.complease take the time to do so.

Players must provide for their own transportation to and from Savannah, meals and gear. Local transportation, tournament entry fees, game jerseys and billeting will be provided by Air Force Sports.  Lodging information will be forthcoming.

Last year we claimed our 8th straight Armed Forces Rugby Championship.  A streak that will be hard to beat!  As rugby evolves in the U.S. and Internationally, so does military rugby.  7s Rugby is a trial sport for the upcoming summer Olympics.  To keep in line with that change, the 2012 Armed Forces Rugby Championship is now a 7s event.  It will be held in Glendale, CO the weekend of 18-19 August.  Even though Armed Forces is now a 7s event, we plan to continue our dominance with 15s rugby through other premier U.S. rugby venues.  There is interest to hold an Interservice 15s tournament 25-26 Aug in Glendale, CO.  Bottom line...there will be plenty of rugby in 2012!

I will remain the USAF rugby director and Head Coach 15s.  Coach Andy McQuade (jamcquade@gmail.com) is the Head Coach USAF 7s.  Coach Tony Ewers (tonyewers@yahoo.comwill play a large role at Savannah and be the assistant 7s coach and the Backs coach for 15s.  Many other outstanding rugby coaches are ready and willing to continue the success of USAF rugby.

Air National Guard and AF Reserve players must get man-days to participate through your local unit.  AF Sports no longer has man-days to offer.  Both USAFA and AFROTC cadets (must be a Senior) may participate, but must contact me for further guidance.

Players wishing to be considered for the 2012 Armed Forces 7s Tournament or the 2012 USAF 15s team must be seen by the coaching staff.  Our success is largely based on the depth of our player pool we've identified and grown over the years.  The trial venue affords the coaching staff the opportunity to evaluate all players over the course of 3-4 training sessions as well as 2 days worth of rugby matches against teams from all over.

The biggest advice I can offer is to communicate with the coaching staff.  If you can't attend Savannah, let us know.  We may be able to scout you at a different venue (e.g. Military Club Nationals in May or club play).  However, these other venues do not afford the coaching staff the opportunity to properly assess potential players' abilities as is the case with the trial venue.  Those individuals selected to represent the AF in 2012 will be made from a pool of proven past performers, the Savannah trial venue and possibly from other venues (such as Mil Nats, club play or word of mouth).

Again, communication w/ the coaching staff is paramount.

Please forward this email to anyone who would benefit from receiving it.

Email if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you in Savannah and a great tournament.

Coach Wayne Kinsel
Director and Head Coach 15s

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM COACH ANDY MCQUADE, USAF 7s HEAD COACH...
 ------------------------------------------------
Gentlemen,

As you all now know the format for the Armed Forces Rugby Tournament will be shifting to Rugby sevens. The USAF Rugby Program is poised to take advantage of this change and dominate in 7s and 15s.

The transition to rugby 7s is opening up doors to our players that have not previously been available.

The first is the availability of the World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) to our rugby players. I would encourage each of you to look into this program offered through AF Sports. I am currently getting educated on how this program can be used to potentially move our athletes to the Olympic level. There will be more information forthcoming. However, if this is a goal of yours we can begin working together to reach your goal.

The second is the support Glendale has contracted to provide through the efforts of Lt Col Gary Helfeldt. The Armed Forces Tournament will be hosted at Infinity Park, CO, in August 2012. If you are unfamiliar with this facility, I would encourage taking a look on the web, as it is the US premier rugby venue. There is no doubt that this opportunity will raise the level of Military rugby to new heights in professionalism and exposure to the civilian community.

With the change to rugby 7s there will be new requirements and structure to the program. Perhaps the biggest is the fact that the entire program will have 12 players and 2 staff. I suspect competition for these 12 slots will be intense. This means fitness, experience, and ability will be held to a new standard.

As Wayne has already indicated, in this year of transition, we will maintain Savannah as our trial venue. Obviously, Savannah is not a 7s venue, but we will do our best to look for the skillset necessary to excel in rugby sevens. These skills will be articulated as we get closer to the tournament. There is a chance a pool of players will be invited to a 7s tournament over the summer. Additionally, there will be a players clinic made available to you in August. More information is forthcoming.

I would like to start collecting names for the 7s pool. If you have interest in playing USAF Rugby Sevens please email me directly at jammcquade@gmail.comPlease let me know if you have previous 7s experience and if you plan to attend Savannah. This is by no means a requirement to feature on the 7s side, but I would like to get an initial assessment of our experience level.

Thanks in advance for all your hard work and effort as we prepare to continue dominance. Please feel free to forward this email to potential USAF players.

Andy McQuade
Head Coach, USAF Rugby Sevens

2011 Paul-Milne Shield (Australia Tour) Update:  The team arrived in Brisbane, Australia the morning of 17 April; the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) had a bus waiting for us at the airport and after a 30 minute ride from the airport we arrived at our final destination--Enoggera Royal Australian Army Base.  We used Enoggera as our "base of operations" while in Australia.  Later that afternoon, we had a light training session to get the blood flowing and work out the kinks.

We squared off against the RAAF Rugby team on Saturday, 23 April at 1500 on Enoggera Army Base.  USAF Rugby struck first in the 3rd minute with a converted penalty kick; USAF Rugby converted 3 more penalty kicks.  The RAAF converted their penatly kick making the score 12-3 at the half.  In the second half, the RAAF came out strong but USAF rose to the challenge, consistently putting the RAAF under pressure and were able to convert another penatly making the score 15-3.  RAAF put together some excellent phases and were able to score a try but unable to convert (15-8).  RAAF intercepted a pass and scampered 35 meters for another unconverted try (15-13).  Late in the half USAF, with a few tactical substitutions, put together excellent phases of rugby stretching from touch line to touch line culminating with a try and conversion (22-13).  The RAAF was down but not out and came roaring back.  USAF's stellar defense was able to squash their attack and turn the ball over.  USAF drove deep into RAAF territory and were award a scrum inside the RAAF 10 meters.  After a quick strike and drive, USAF drove over the try linefor another score, but the conversion sailed wide left.  Final score USAF 27  RAAF 13.  Dan Griffin and Thomas Heath shared man of the match honors.

We squared off against the RNZAF team on Wednesday, 27 April at 1400 on Enoggera Army Base.  The match was very tight in the first half. USAF came out tough and initially drove the RNZAF back inside their 22 meters.  However, the Kiwis were able to quickly move the ball and soon USAF was under pressure.  USAF committed some mental mistakes and soon the Kiwis capitalized on our inability to get 3rd and 4th phase ball going and were excellent at poaching the ball and even better at transitioning our mistakes into 2 tries.  At the half, it was RNZAF 12 USAF 0.  The second half saw more of the same from the first half with the Kiwis pulling away and putting an additional 17 points on the board.  At the final whistle, it was RNZAF 29 USAF 0.  Man of the match honors went to Jammey Tipper-Booth

Australia 2011:  The following players were selected to the USAF Rugby team for their upcoming 4-way tournament against the Royal Australian Air Force, Royal New Zealand Air Force and Royal Malaysian Air Force rugby teams, 15 April - 2 May.
