Central Coast Youth Rugby

Next in our series on Extraordinary Airman involved in rugby around the world, we turn our focus to Airman Nash Honodel, who is currently stationed at Vandenberg AFB and helps coach the Central Coast Sharks Youth Rugby.

Central Coast Youth Rugby is a recently formed organization promoting rugby on the West Coast. The club officially started its season in January of 2012. By introducing the game of rugby to a rural area of California, the experienced coaching staff has managed to see incredible growth each year, while at the same time keeping it cost efficient. Central Coast Youth Rugby encourages family and community involvement. The camaraderie and sportsmanship between players is unlike any sport, which is why most players go on to form life-long friendships with former teammates and opponents. Additionally, the organization’s focus is to show kids it’s not about winning or losing, but having fun, making new friends, and bringing people from all over to experience the Central Coast.

Central Coast Sharks span multiple age groups from U-10 to U-18. The coaching staff maintains USA Rugby certifications and is certified on the latest sports safety protocols, including concussions and anti-harassment. Nash Honodel currently holds a Level 1 World Coaching Certification and is working towards a Level 300 USA Rugby Coaching Certification. Nash on coaching rugby, “Coaching Rugby [is] a unique insight into both the greatest sport in the world [while providing the opportunity to take] an active role in players lives. Being able to watch players grow personally and athletically can be even more rewarding than a victory on match day. After playing rugby over 12 years for a variety of clubs in a variety of locations, coaching has been by far the most rewarding experience.”

LVI 2016 - Camp Selections

IMG_3897 (1).JPG

Due to military obligation, some of the initial selectees are  unable to attend Las Vegas. We would like to congratulate the athletes on their selection to compete for a chance to represent the United States Air Force during the upcoming Las Vegas Invitational Tournament and Rugby Festival.

As the player pool grows with talent, selections become tougher and tougher for the staff. With limited spots in Sevens Rugby, the competition to make one of these spots is fierce and has come with some scrutiny from some in the program. It is important to remember we're all in this together and the program is far bigger than any one person; which is especially true in rugby.

USAF Rugby only moves forward when everyone involved is committed, supportive, confident in the decisions being made and what we're working hard to achieve.

Congratulations again on the LVI selectees!
